HPDA is celebrating Oral Health Month with Smile Days yet again this year!

What are Smile Days?

Smile Days are opportunities to give back to your community. Over the course of February – May, volunteers provide free dental care to members of the public nominated by various community agencies. In the past year, members of the provincial government and Public Health have dropped by to give their thanks.

Take a look at previous Smile Days to see the impact HPDA has made.

How Can I Get Involved?

If you are interested in helping people in need, sign up to be a volunteer . Just indicate your preferred day(s) of availability and which treatment(s) you are comfortable performing.

2025 Squash & Pickleball Day

The Hamilton Academy of Dentistry, together with the Halton-Peel Dental Association, was proud to host the 2025 Squash & Pickleball Day — a lively day of friendly competition, great food, and community spirit.

Members enjoyed tournaments in both pickleball and squash, with plenty of energy on the courts and camaraderie off them. Lunch was provided, and participants had the chance to relax and connect between matches.

Trophies were awarded to the champions in each category, celebrating both their skill and sportsmanship.

Let’s Talk About Vaping

Not An Experiment
Not An Experiment (www.NotAnExperiment.ca) is a website that was developed by Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit in collaboration with a group of youth from the community.

It was created in 2019 in response to a rapid rise in the popularity of vaping among youth and unknowns associated with long-term vaping.

It is an interactive website available to youth (grades 7 to 12) and their parents to learn more about vaping and its risks.

There are various resources available directed at youth, parents, and educators to support youth with vaping such as:

o   Information on vaping, the health effects, and the vaping industry.
o   Support for youth with vaping and mental health, resisting peer pressure and quitting vaping.
o   Support for parents on how to talk to their kids about vaping.
o   Resources for educators to educate youth in schools.

Drake, Cyndi Lauper, Backstreet Boys, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer; you name it, we sang it! On December 7th, the Halton Peel Dental Association (HPDA) hosted their first charity karaoke event at Young St Karoke Mississauga, in support of Food Banks Mississauga.

Members came out with their families, friends, and staff wearing their 'ugly' holiday sweaters and sang their hearts out! The evening was filled with food, prizes, laughter and overall a great time! More importantly, the HPDA was able to fundraise over $1,500 at the event and has become one of Food Banks Mississauga top donors this year! Food Banks Mississauga supports a network of 60+ agencies that serve over 30,000 food bank users every year and the HPDA has formed a team to become Hunger Warriors campaigning for the charity. During the HPDA’s last few educational seminars, members have been bringing non-perishable food items which have also been donated to Food Banks Mississauga. The evening started strong with our very own Past President Dr. William Rodriguez singing a festive holiday song. There was even Bollywood tunes thrown in the mix and we ended our night with Dr. James Tonogai, current President of the HPDA singing Coldplay. Thank you to all of the HPDA members for coming out and supporting Food Banks Mississauga. A special thanks to our non-member volunteers Tracy Xavier for managing registration and Nachiketa Amin for his wonderful photography. We look forward to seeing you all next year for another fun charity event!

We have 6 upcoming Smile Days in 2024 (free dental days) being hosted by generous HPDA dentists.

We need dentists to volunteer in the morning or afternoon to provide free dental care at these offices. The dates and locations are: Friday, February 2 (Mississauga), Friday, March 1 (Oakville); Friday, April 5 (Etobicoke); Friday, April 12 (Malton); Friday, April 26 (Mississauga); Friday, April 26 (Bolton).

HPDA Dentists Want to Help

Peel Public Health asked if HPDA dentists would be willing to volunteer to administer the vaccine at mass immunization clinics. Over 200 dentists indicated that they are available to help. Currently, it is not in the dentist's scope of practice to administer vaccines in Ontario. The ODA will be providing updates about this.
