Course Description:
The classification and diagnosis of periodontal diseases is an important process for each patient encountered in a general dental practice setting. This course will highlight the changes in the 2018 update of the classification system and introduce participants to a step-wise method for applying the system and developing a diagnostic statement.
A variety of common periodontal diseases and conditions will be illustrated using case-based approach to diagnosis.
Learning objectives:
- understand the different types of periodontal and peri-implant disease
- be able to apply staging and grading to a diagnosis of periodontitis
- use clinical findings to develop a periodontal diagnosis
- implement the step-wise approach to classifying periodontal and peri-implant diseases in a general practice setting
Presenters Bio:
Dr. Ryan Schure, DDS, MSc (Perio), FRCD(C)
Dr. Ryan Schure earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Toronto in 2010. He went on to complete his Master of Science degree with advanced training in periodontology and implant surgery at the University of Toronto. His research on the relationships between cardiovascular diseases and periodontal diseases has been published and presented at international meetings. Dr. Schure is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada and a Diplomate of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists, and works in a large multidisciplinary specialty practice in Toronto. He is currently on the executive of the North Toronto Dental Society and the Alpha Omega Dental Society. He is also an Assistant Professor and course director at the University at Buffalo’s School of Dental Medicine.
Dr. Siavash Hassanpour, HBSc, MSc, DDS, MSc (Perio), FRCD(C)
Dr. Hassanpour graduated from the University of Toronto in 2008 with a degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology (HBSc). In 2010, Dr. Hassanpour entered the Doctor of Dental Surgery program at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto. Dr. Hassanpour entered the Periodontology Speciality program in 2014 and earned his specialty training and degree in Periodontics (MSc Perio) at the University of Toronto in 2017. Dr. Hassanpour is a licensed periodontal specialist and a board-certified periodontist. He has a practice limited to Periodontology in North York and is a part-time clinical instructor at the University of Toronto’s Graduate Periodontology Clinic. Dr. Hassanpour is a past-president of the Toronto Central Dental Society, and is the president of the Ontario Society of Periodontology.
