Course Description:

This practical course helps general dentists and their teams recognize developing orthodontic problems early and understand when to intervene, monitor, or refer. Using real clinical cases, participants will learn an approach to mixed-dentition assessment. It will include a review of common interceptive strategies supporting better and efficient outcomes for their patients using sound clinical decision-making.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

• Identify developing orthodontic problems in the mixed dentition through a structured clinical and radiographic assessment.
• Determine when to intervene, monitor, or refer based on growth patterns, malocclusion severity, and risk assessment.
• Describe the indications, limitations, timing, and risks of common interceptive orthodontic strategies, such as: including space management, crossbite correction, and habit control.

Speaker Biography:

 Dr. Mark Eckler, DDS, MSc, Dip Ortho graduated from Western University in 1993 and completed a General Practice Residency at McGill University before earning his Diploma in Orthodontics and Master of Science from Saint Louis University in 1997. He has participated in the orthodontic treatment of over 30,000 patients, has taught at the Universities of Toronto and Western Ontario, and was a RCDSO councilor. Dr. Eckler is a recipient of the Halton Peel Dental Association’s Certificate of Recognition and is delighted to be a returning HPDA speaker. Outside of dentistry, he is an avid downhill skier, runner, pickleball player, and a self-described aspiring hockey player. He is married and has two daughters.
