Course Description:

PERI-IMPLANT DISEASES “ A growing problem in the implant dentistry”

Implant therapy has increasingly gained recognition in the realm of restorative dentistry, as methods of restoring dentition develop and improve. Thus far, the safety, predictability, and versatility in prosthetic options have made implant therapy a popular option from a single tooth restoration to the full-arch rehabilitation. However, rapidly emerging literature-based evidence regarding peri-implantitis has been casting a shadow on implants more frequently. These diseases have various etiologic evolution and devastating progression, leading to the patients’ discomfort, compromised aesthetics, and eventual implant loss. This continually challenging disease around the dental implants are among us, and the diagnosis, management and prevention protocols were not standardized until 2017 AAP classification of peri-implant diseases shed some light on this clinical reality.

The complexities of the diseases continue to encounter unclear protocols in management, and treatment with predictable clinical outcome has yet to be established. This seminar will bring you up to speed not only in the literature content, but also the various clinical modalities in this ever-dynamic realm of the peri-implant-attachment apparatus along with the microbiological realities of those failing/failed implants surfaces.

Learning objectives:

1. 2017 AAP/EFP Peri-implant diseases classification

2. Prevalence and risk factors

3. Microbiological reality of Peri-implant diseases

4. Introduction of the various management protocols

5. De-osseointegration: Atraumatic Explantation method

6. Benefit of the Hermeticism in the “Implant-Transepithelial-Prosthetic” Joint

Dr Jae W. Chang is a dentist with extensive experience spanning 22 years, in the Etobicoke and Hamilton regions of Ontario in Canada. He graduated from the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Western Ontario in 2000 and over the years, he has continued to learn about dentistry, focusing on modern technologies, with a specific interest in oral implants.

In 2015, Dr Chang pursued an MSc degree in Oral Implantology at one of the most prestigious universities in Germany, the JW Goethe University. Following his degree, his thesis on Implant Stability Quotient and Bone-to-Implant contact area analyses of immediately placed implants in Human Cadavers was selected for presentation at the Congress in Oral Implantology in Germany at the same university and ITI (International Team of Implantology, Switzerland) North America Congress in Chicago.

This inspired him to pursue full-time graduate study to specialise in Periodontics at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada in 2018. During his formal training at the university, he was awarded “Doctor of Dental Medicine Teaching Award’ in recognition of excellence in teaching for two consecutive years. Dr Chang’s theses on peri-implant disease (Scanning Electron Microscopy Analysis of Biofilm on Dental Implants Explanted Due to Peri-Implantitis) was selected for poster presentation at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Periodontology in November 2020 and again presented during Research Day at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada in 2021.

He is a fellow and diplomate with the international Congress of Oral Implantologists(I.C.O.I.).He is also a fellow with the Royal Colleges of Dentist of Canada in the specialty of Periodontics.

Dr Chang has taught and lectured at the “Live Implant Training Institute” in a number of global locations, educating general dentists and specialists from the USA and Canada on oral implantology. Dr. Chang had served as a dentist in the polyclinics at the Olympics and Paralympics in Vancouver in 2010 and at the Pan Am and Para Pan Am Games in Toronto in 2015.

Dr. Paculanan graduated from Centro Escolar University, School of  Dentistry in Manila, Philippines with the degree of Doctor of Dental Medicine in 1988. He practiced general dentistry in Manila before immigrating to Canada in 1996.

After working as a dental technician for several years in Toronto, Dr. Paculanan returned to school to complete a Master’s Certificate in Advanced Prosthodontics from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 2008. Dr. Paculanan taught as a clinical lecturer at University of Michigan, School of Dentistry,

Dr. Paculanan was also faculty in the Department of Prosthodontics at University of Toronto, Faculty of Dentistry, He was course director of the 3rd year undergrad Prosthodontic Course and Director of IDAPP(International Dentist Advance Placement Program) Prosthodontics.
